1959 Land Rover Series II 88” — 2.25 Petrol

Some Land Rovers are restored to look old. This one simply is.

Built in 1959, this early Land Rover Series II 88” has exactly the kind of character that can’t be recreated. The faded paint, aged interior, old gauges, weathered steering wheel, canvas top and small imperfections all tell the same story: this Land Rover has been around for nearly seven decades, and thankfully nobody has tried to erase that.

Originally delivered in The Netherlands and nearly 40 years with one owner.

Under the hood is the classic 2.25-liter gasoline engine, paired with a manual gearbox, high/low transfer case and selectable four-wheel drive. Simple, mechanical and exactly as a Series Land Rover should be.

The interior is wonderfully basic. An ivory dashboard, period-style instruments, two front seats, two rear benches, bare aluminum floors and a collection of levers, switches and Lucas details that remind you how uncomplicated vehicles once were.

Outside, the soft blue-green bodywork works beautifully with the sand-colored canvas top and white steel wheels. The car also comes with a commercial hardtop. And yes, the heavy rope around the front bumper stays.

This is not a concours restoration and that’s fine!

It is an honest, charming early Series II with genuine patina and a presence that is increasingly difficult to find. The kind of Land Rover you can park outside a café, on a farm, at the beach or in the middle of a city and somehow it always looks right.

Sommige oude Land Rovers worden gerestaureerd om er oud uit te zien. Deze is gewoon oud.

Deze vroege Land Rover Series II 88” komt uit 1959 en heeft precies het soort karakter dat je niet kunt namaken. Bijna 40 jaar bij één eigenaar en origineel in Nederland geleverd. De verweerde lak, het oude interieur, de instrumenten, het prachtige stuur, de canvas kap en alle kleine gebruikssporen vertellen samen het verhaal van een Land Rover die al bijna zeventig jaar bestaat.

En gelukkig heeft niemand geprobeerd dat verleden weg te poetsen.

Onder de motorkap ligt de klassieke 2.25 liter benzinemotor, gekoppeld aan een handgeschakelde versnellingsbak, hoge en lage gearing en inschakelbare vierwielaandrijving. Eenvoudig, mechanisch en precies zoals een Series Land Rover hoort te zijn.

Ook het interieur is heerlijk basic. Het ivoorkleurige dashboard, de oude klokken, twee zitplaatsen voorin, twee bankjes achterin, aluminium vloer en alle losse hendels en schakelaars geven hem die typische vroege Land Rover-sfeer.

Aan de buitenkant is de combinatie van de zacht blauwgroene carrosserie, zandkleurige canvas kap en witte stalen velgen ontzettend goed. En ja, het dikke touw om de voorbumper blijft zitten. (Commercial hardtop zit ook bij de auto).

Dit is geen concours gerestaureerde auto en dat is Ok!

Het is een eerlijke vroege Series II met echte patina, veel sfeer en een uitstraling die steeds moeilijker te vinden is. Een Land Rover die net zo goed staat bij een strandtent, op een boerenerf, midden in de stad of gewoon voor de werkplaats.
